REALITY

Impossible to quantify, but interesting to contemplate.

We Deserve More Fun

in the Schooling Experience

The reason I dislike school the most is because it is no fun. We are expected to sit (not stand or move around at all) for 11,000 plus hours under the guise that in the end it is good for us and we just can't see it at the time.

Unfortunately,  at the end we find out that a high school degree is worth essentially nothing without more years taken out of our lives for more dull schooling. It's hard not to deduce from the fact the high school diploma isn't worth much that most of are childhood schooling is a waste of time.

Sure, the pre-college schooling has some minor benefit, but for the amount of time spent and the amount of youth wasted it doesn't seem like a good plan considering no intelligent person would base their future on just a high school degree.

It's hard to believe in 11,000 hours we can't teach people enough to have them forego college and the college expense.

It's amazing that we give up this much time and energy for something this inefficient and boring. Especially, since we are giving up much of our youth to participate.

It seems like no one has ever taken a hard look at school. How did we start on the road of boring and punitive? Why is there no mandate to make it fun and interesting? Why are we assuming kids need to be controlled in a prison like setting?

Everyone's kind of overlooking the fact that school is for the kids. School needs to be the facilitator to making a kid's dreams come true. Our job should be to do whatever we can to help kids reach the highest heights and know the true adventure of life.

We need to think in terms of "how wonderful could I make this kid's life?"

It needs to be fun. Not Willy Wonka fun, but something they are dying to do all the time. It needs to be something more equivalent to after school sports. It needs to be something they are looking forward to doing.

The fact that school is mandated pretty much sums up the quality of the experience.

The only philosophy under which the current system makes sense is if we don't believe a person can have fun and simultaneously get things done too. Hopefully, if anyone takes a hard look at the previous statement they will see the absurdity of this notion.

School will never meet its potential until it readily admits that it is there solely for the kids, it has an obligation to be fun and needs personnel who can create a curriculum where the kids are excited to be there.

The fact that a high school diploma, in of itself, has very little value should be a sobering indicator that we can do much better.
